An "upright grand" piano is simply a big old upright piano. The term was common in the early part of the twentieth century and was intended to infer a sense of higher quality than the rather ordinary term "upright piano" (and was often used by manufacturers of lower quality instruments). "Cabinet grand" was a similar term applied to upright pianos.

I think the bass strings of an upright grand are longer than in plain upright.

It depends on the brand and model style. It should say it when you look at it especially online.

My Shaffer and Sons upright piano is 60 inches wide. (Note, 60" is the overall, outer dimension... not the length of just the keyboard)

There is no "best piano." The best way to tell what is best is to go to a Piano Hall or visit private homes to try out a piano you might be interested in and go with what has the best sound and feel that you prefer. Obviously the older the piano is, the worse the osund tends to be but as far as brands...it depends on what you prefer.

There are many similarities between an upright piano and a grand piano. They generally have the same keys, same notes, same approximate range of tones, and more or less, the same sound. The main and most obvious DIFFERENCE is shape and layout. An upright piano is what most people have in their homes (if they have a piano). The keyboard is sort of a "shelf" on an upright box with the strings running vertically (up & down). A grand piano is the long, curve-bodied piano with a large lid and keyboard at the end. The strings run horizontally. Grand pianos usually have a larger, louder and fuller sound. Hope that helps!

A grand piano also known as a concert grand is relatively long and is typically the type of piano seen in a professional orchestra. Meanwhile, a upright piano has the same # of keys (88) but the strings are positioned vertically so as to save space. This is in contrast to a Grand Piano in that the strings on such pianos are horizontal instead of vertical.

Upright pianos vary in weight, as they come in a large range of sizes and brands. Small upright can weigh about 400 lbs. while grand pianos can sometimes weigh over 1,000 lbs.

A grand piano has the strings laying flat and an upright piano has them vertical. A grand piano will produce a richer sound also.
