A "Brass" sax is simply another color. I have played both and as far as functionality and tone quality are concerned I neither see or hear any difference. Some might argue that the silver metal might give your tone a bit more "brightness", but their hearing would have to be abnormally sensitive.

In a nut shell, the only difference is aesthetics.

Who first played alto sax?

Adolphe Sax invented the saxophone in 1846. He wanted to create a link between woodwind and brass instruments in military bands, so he created what we now know as the alto sax. He didn't plan to make more, but somebody convinced him to create the full quartet, and the rest is history.

Do the notes on a tenor sax use the same fingers as on a alto?

Yes. All the Sax family uses the same basic fingerings. Sax is a transposing instrument so the fingered notes are not the concert pitch of what is produced. A C# note is fingered the same on any sax but the note that comes out depends on which type of sax it is.The soprano sax is an octave higher than a tenor. The Alto sax is an octave higher than a baritone. There is a difference of a major sixth between the tenor and alto saxes.
