They're the same thing it's just two different spellings, similar to the difference between the American "color" and British "colour." However, when you are using the plural of "staff" it would be staves and not staffs. I'm guessing that's where the term stave would have originated. They can be usedinterchangeably.
The five lines that the music is written on is called the stave, or the staff for bass and treble! :)
Music Notes are written on a stave. A stave has 5 Lines and spaces. Notes can either go on the lines or in the spaces. If you are piano player you might play on a grand stave or sometime spelt grand staff. That is where you have 2 stave's joint together. Hope this helps

Lines added to the stave when notes are below or above the top of the stave are called "ledger lines" or "leger lines". They can occur in any stave indicating an instrument with melody.

A staff or a stave is the system of parallel lines and spaces used to write music notation.
Music is composed of sound or sounds that create rhythms in time.
A staff or stave.

The five lines that music is written on are called a "staff" or "stave." Each line and space on the staff represents a different musical pitch, and additional symbols such as clefs, notes, and rests are used to convey specific musical information. The staff is essential for notating melodies, harmonies, and rhythms in music.
A stave clef, commonly known as a staff clef, is a symbol placed at the beginning of a musical staff to indicate the pitch of the notes written on that staff. The most common types of stave clefs are the treble clef and bass clef, which designate specific note ranges for instruments and voices. The treble clef, for example, indicates that the second line of the staff represents the note G, while the bass clef indicates that the second line represents F. These clefs help musicians read and interpret the music accurately.
