A violin is a much smaller instrument. Its bottom note is the G below middle C. Then you go to the D above Middle C, then A, and E. From there you can play the notes to the top note on the piano. The tuning is called tuning by fifths. Every note is the fifth note higher than the last. Of course, the A is tuned first. The Double Bass is a great big instrument. It is 3 octaves lower than the violin. It is tuned in fourths. E, A, D, and G. Sometimes there is a fifth string tuned to the lowest A on the piano. There is also a device that frequently is put on that string to tune it to a higher note such as C. While the Violin is held under a persons chin and extends less than the length of an outreached arm, the double bass is quite tall. The double bass uses the bass cleft with a number below the cleft sign. That number indicates the number of octaves below middle c the instrument will play. A good double bass player can play any note that a piano can play. It still sounds like a double bass playing a high note.
