BLACK = Satanic, often with an epic sound and shrieked vocals. Sometimes slightly gothic as well, but always anti-Christian. Roots in the NWOBHM with bands like Venom, followed by bands like Celtic Frost and Bathory. Big Scandinavian scene.
THRASH = fast, not particularly melodic, non-singing vocals. Roots in the NWOBHM and earlier with bands such as Motorhead and Diamond Head. Big Four are Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. Big American and German scenes.
DEATH = fast, unmelodic, low, growled vocals. Interested in death and all things associated with it. Roots in thrash metal. Big American scene.

Metallica and bands like Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth, started in the early to mid '80s.
