Oblivious to the audience, we are now watching simultaneously the real dating of Ethan and Jesse, and watching the new writings of Ethan's inspired work, played out side by side , Troy Meets Girl. Jesse was never cheating, Troy did not exist. Her secret was that she could not have Children.
So in the end, Jesse does marry Ethan, and the book ends with her marrying the hyped up character of Ethan, Troy.
