George Catlin was part of the conservation movement, just one of the many movements going on during the Antebellum period. He traveled West, lived among Native Americans, and brought back his experiences through writings and his famous portraits and paintings. In his book, Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians, Catlin introduced the idea of National Parks. While not fully accepted at the time, National Parks slowly worked their way into America. Also, Catlin educated Americans about the beauty of their land, inspired nationalism, and taught about the often overlooked Native Americans. Although many Americans were not interested in the subject at the time, Catlin's work was a symbol of nationalistic pride, American heritage, the West, and wonders of America for years to come. His work still rests in the Smithsonian.
