There are a lot of interpretations on this subject. My personal thoughts on this is that it symbolises the loss of innocence. The title is a prime example of this. A butterfly in many cultures symbolises a free and innocent creature. With it being caught, it gives the impression of purposefully taking that freedom and innocence away. The lyrics allude to infantile imagery such as "uncut teeth, pale skin, freckles" which makes me think that this is a child or someone adolescent. The creepy element is the repetition of "keep smiling for me". Why? Why would you ever ask someone to keep smiling for you?
