You tried to taste me,

And I taped my tongue to the southern tip of your body.

Our bones are too heavy to come up,

Squished into a single cell of wood.

I made an excuse.

You found another way to tell the truth.

I put no one else above us.

We'll still be best friends when all turns to dust.

We are so smooth now.

Our edges are beaten, drift wood whittled down.

Old bodies slip when they make love.

We'll mine our sparks to shoot us above!

I love this song. It's a nice mix of indie and old school rock.

My theory is that the song is about a friendship that turned into a relationship and talking about it's progression.

"You tried to taste me" implies trying to understand or figure out. To gauge the other person.

"I taped my tongue to the southern tip of your body" suggests that they were strictly trying to maintain a physical relationship. Hinting at apprehension of anything beyond that by saying taped. It's restrictive.

"Our bones are too heavy to come up" Our true selves, our baggage, the weight of our inner self is too much to come out now at this early stage of the relationship. There is a fear here.

"Squished into a single cell of wood" might mean that they are only revealing a very very limited part of themselves. The relationship is new and they are not going to let themselves be vulnerable at this point. The single cell of wood commenting on how little is being revealed when there are heavy bones below.

"I made an excuse". I dodged you. Admitting that I basically hid from you. It could be they are admitting they were not being vulnerable or side stepped something.

"You found another way to tell the truth" You saw past it. You understood why I might hide and you knew what it was I was doing or maybe why I was doing it.

"I put no one else above us." In spite of my hiding I didn't hold anything else closer or dearer.

"We'll still be best friends when all turns to dust." This means they were friends first and it's gone beyond that. When this side of their relationship ends they'll still be friends. It sounds like a good friendship has turned into a physical one and he's pledging not to let it ruin what ever it was they had. This might be someone he's been pining after for a while. hard to say. I'm reading into that as this is treading close to something personal for me. Probably why I love the song.

"We are so smooth now" The song has jumped ahead. They are now entwined in a very close relationship.

"Our edges are beaten, drift wood whittled down" The rough edges and unknowns are all gone. They are clicking along and well beyond the awkward origin phase of their relationship.

"Old bodies slip when they make love" A comment on their familiarization and comfort with one another. There is an ease about this relationship.

"We'll mine our sparks to shoot us above" It means their relationship is going to last. These sparks are going to push us up and beyond.
