Yes, people do have memory base on senses. It's called sensory memory. And it often is one of the ways that we involutarily remember those that we love or have loved. Sometimes it shows up in a song, or a smell, or just because. But we often remember and hold onto memories of love that we have or have had for others. Even a love that's over and gone sour still can bear fond memories. Memories are for keeps.
