I'm not sure the inspiration for the song "Melinda" by John and Terry Talbot, but Terry says it was them "just telling stories." I can give you a synopsis of it. A man goes to a witch's cabin in the foothills of Tennessee to inquire about his dead mother, who he never knew. Of course, he arrives at night, with a shrouded moon and howling wind. The witch tells him that his mother died giving birth to him, but that a twin remained in the womb, unable to be born because the mother had died. At that moment, the door swings open, and there is a woman standing "her hair a blackened fringe." Upon her seeing him, she screams and turns to run, shouting "the dead can bear no sons!" (referring to her unborn son) The old hag hobbles to the door and calls out his mother's name: "MELINDA! MELINDA!"
