I think he played a conn 6h
Most famous and able composers for the trombone, in orchestral line-up, are Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Of course there are a lot more composers you could mention, each with his own perspective of how to make use the trombone is his compositions.
Yes he played the piano and the trombone. He was for a time a professional trombone player.
By moving the "slide"
It is technically the only instrument that sounds mostly like a human voice other than the guitar and the only brass instrument with a slide giving the player a disadvantage of playing fast but is good practice and an easy instrument to master. it is really a mixture of trumpet and tuba it is the middle instrument the one keeping the band together!
That would be the trombone. The trombone has a main slide instead of valves to alter the length of tubing that the vibrating air has to travel through to change the pitch of notes. All brass instruments have tuning slides to slightly lengthen or shorten the tubing length to help tune the instrument.

at the back. I think
The player's lips vibrate.
they are all brass instruments but all have different pitches and different embouchures, such as the tuba is the lowest brass instrument and the trumpet is the highest and the trombone and french horn is in the middle, a tuba you have to have big lips to vibrate them loose and trombone and french horn too but you have to have tight lips for them and trumpet you have to have small lips and they all have valves except the trombone which has a slide to change pitch which makes it harder. (sorry if this was not the answer you wanted because i am a trombone player).
