It's so well known it feels silly to answer the question. It started out as a yearning by Eddie to speak to his biological father, whom he recently discovered he never really knew. At the time, it was a sad and disheartening song--angry that the Dad he grew up with wasn't his Dad. But, then, Eddie announced a couple of years ago that the audience has influenced the meaning of the song so positively and loudly at concerts, in a manner that celebrates "one is alive." He said, "The thing is...the audience lifted the curse."
