A DJ's main purpose is to keep people dancing and having fun. A good DJ can accurately gauge a crowd's mood and musical taste, and will choose which music he plays accordingly. Only a human being can do this, which is why most clubs still use DJs, even though it would be just as easy -- and much, much cheaper -- to just hook an iPod Shuffle up to the speakers.
