What is the range of the bass guitar?

I'm going to assume you mean the range of notes. Keep in mind the bass is written an octave below where it actually sounds. The standard bass has 4 strings tuned to E, A, D and G.

The standard Bass Guitar has the same range as that of a double bass - The low note is the E below the bass cleff staff (41.25 Hz) - and the high string is a G. The standard Fender design has 20 frets, making your high note the high Eb in the treble staff (written) which sounds an octave lower, which is the Eb above Middle C. A good bass player is capable of playing harmonics which extend the range of the instrument 2 to 3 octaves higher than that.

Also, there are 5 strings basses which have a low B string (around 30 Hz) extending the range a fourth lower and 6 string basses that have a high C string - extending the range a 4th higher.

The double bass plays the same range as the bass guitar (give or take the high end of the fret/fingerboard). It is tuned from low to high: E, A, D, G, so I suggest not writing an octave and a third or so beyond the open G string. You may wish to note that the bass sounds one octave lower than it reads. Basically, if you're having trouble counting ledger lines, you're probably out of range. _____ Almost three octaves upwards from from E in the space between the 4th and 5th leger lines below the bass staff.
