The East Coast-West Coast hip hop rivalry was a feud in the early-mid 1990s between artists and fans of the East Coast and West Coast hip-hop scenes. Seeming focal points of the feud were West Coast-based rapper 2Pac (and his label, Death Row Records), and East Coast-based rapper The Notorious B.I.G. west coast rap was generally more of the "gangster" rap while east coast was smooth and easy listening. west coast had made songs using samples from 70's disco and funk these beats became known as "g-funk". west side also implemented more freestyle rap and had a chorus in their songs. east side however, used the smooth sound of jazz and added the nice effect of turn tables. the east side flowed more to the beat of the beats and west coast was generally getting a point across while still flowing with the beat to an extant.

West Coast and East Coast rap have many differences shown in many different groups. West Coast has Gangsta rap and G-funk. East Coast has use of jazz instruments and other forms.
