In Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone the hat told Harry that he had a good mind, talent, plenty of courage and the thirst to prove himself. It also said he would do well in Slytherin, but Harry refused and asked not to be placed there so the hat decided to put him in Gryffindor.

A year later, in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the hat maintains that Slytherin would have been a good house for Harry.

Nitwit is for Ravenclaw house who are smart and believe that others who are nitwits are not worthy of Ravenclaw.

Blubber is for Gryffindor house who are brave and believe that others who blubber are not worthy of Gryffindor.

Oddment is for Slytherin who are cunning, pure-bloods who don't like being different and believe that others who are oddments are not worthy of Slytherin.

Tweak is for Hufflepuff who will except everyone and there is no need to tweak anybody.

This is Dumbledore commenting on why Sorting isn't perfect, he does this another time in the book when he states that he thinks they sort to early.
