Those AM receivers that are built in superheterodyne configuration almost

always have 455 KHz as their IF frequency. I've known this now for about

60 years, but still have no idea where that number came from. It seems an

unwise choice, since, for roughly the lower half of the AM band, it places the

local oscillator necessarily smack in the upper half of the band. But I'm sure

that several engineers smarter than I had good reasons for putting it there.
