They are quite active and are very alert. They make outstanding watch dogs. They are classified in the guard dog class in Germany along with Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Doberman Pinschers because of their keen alert nature and strong predisposition to guard and defend. They are friendly, intelligent and quite playful. They can learn rather quickly due to their intelligence however they are a bit mischievous. A calm, assertive, authoritative approach is recommended in training and discipline. They are known to dislike being shouted at and will ignore a loud command. They are good with children but early socialization is important to their social development. Owners often describe them as fun, interesting, and entertaining dogs. A line used by some in describing Min Pins is "they are like potato chips...you can't have just one!"
