West Side Story is about love and romance that develops amid conflict between two warring street gangs, the white ethnic American Jets and the newly-arrived Puerto Rican Sharks, only to be destroyed by the constant tensions and hostilities between the two gangs, as well as the deaths of Riff, Bernardo and Tony. There is, however a hint of reconciliation in the end when several Jets and Sharks come together to carry Tony's body off, and when Baby-John puts the mourning veil upon Maria's head.

Based on Romeo and Juliet but a modern take on the storyline.
