The above answer is not far from the truth, but I figured I'd clear up a few misconceptions as well as add a bit:
Lesane Parish Crooks was the name that Afeni wrote on Pac's birth certificate because she feared persecution might be directed towards her newborn because of her involvement in the Black Panther Movement (and due to her distrust/fear in/of the American Government).
I believe that there is some legitimate confusion on the meaning of "Tupac Amaru." I'm pretty sure that the original Tupac Amaru was a fierce Inca chief, whose name meant "intelligent warrior," although I've also read that it means "shining serpent."
