Rap and Hip Hop were on their way to success in the late 1900s. It was made popular just by it's mere coming into the industry. Rap and Hip Hop songs were being played on the radio, and everyone was talking about it. It was a new era of music, and everyone was excited for it. People like Jam Master Jay (of Run DMC) made it popular, along with Easy E and other old school artists like Doug E Fresh. Then in the late 80s and 90s, a whole new game arose from Rap, and that was Dr Dre/Snoop Dogg/Tupac/Biggie/Eminem era. Eminem is a great example, because he appeals to basically anyone. If one wanted classic, gangsta music, they could hit up some Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg songs. If someone wanted a sort of different breed of Rap, they could check out Eminem's music. Then in 2000 and onwards, there was 50 Cent, who popularized Rap and Hip Hop immensely. So basically it was a new era in music, and people started to indulge in that. It still is, and always will be, the best genre of music ever.
