A light metallic and wood framework containing gas bags filled with a hydrogen (or nowadays helium). The structure was covered in a canvas like material to protect it from the weather and it had engines with propellers fitted to the outside and a passenger gondola on the underside.

The first zeppelins were made out of rubberized cotton and inflated with hydrogen gas. They were generally long, tubular-shaped aircraft that had wings.
