Alternative rock is alternative only to 'pop' music, so it will change as popular culture changes. Currently, the term 'alternative rock' is used to describe a music genre of mostly heavier, less radio-friendly rock. However, should what we now think of as alternative rock be assimilated into mainstream pop culture, it can no longer be considered alternative. Also, note that it is just an arbitrary label used to categorize a broad range of different sounds and artists and is in no way definitive or absolute.

Long hair, tattered jeans and the converse shoes. Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Dexter Holland, Axel Rose, Slash and Dave Grohl made helped create rock n roll.

∙ 9y agoAlternative Rock aka alternative. It is music distant from the mainstream genres, and songs you may typically hear. It seems as if it has descended from punk rock into its own genre. It has a rock vibe to it while mixing in some more pop punk/pop beats to it. Making it a new genre. Point is: It's music thats different than other genres with influences from many.
