string
In general, the strings make up around 75% of the orchestra.
The Brown Group makes footwear
Probably around 90. The Boston Pops is the Boston Symphony Orchestra minus the first chair players in every section, who have separate contracts. The actual number varies according to what works are being performed. Composers will usually call out the instruments needed, and how many of each instrument, in a particular work. In the woodwinds, brass and percussion, this can be critical. In the strings, one or two one way or the other makes no difference with an orchestra of that caliber.
I'm assuming that you mean the concertmaster, or the person in the first chair of the first violin section in an orchestra. The concertmaster is the most violinist in the orchestra and leads the section. He makes decisions about bowings, fingerings, and playing style for the 1st violins. In a concert, the concertmaster emerges just before the concert begins and takes a bow on behalf of the orchestra. He also leads the orchestra in turning and is responsible for playing solo sections in orchestral music.
Erhu is not suitable in the orchestra, because it only has 2 strings, and symphony compsitions for the violin are usually going beyond the 2 strings that the erhu has, which is middle D and A. The other reason may be, the materials used to make the erhu: the bow of the erhu is made of horsetail, and the soundbox of the instrument is made of snake skin. Therefore, it makes the 'voice' of the erhu sound melancholy, and occasionally it may sound like somebody crying. Thus, it is not suitable to be in an orchestra. But rather, a Chinese orchestra.
