To paint subjects other than those mentioned in The Bible(Jesus, Mary, God, etc.), or the wealthy(usually patrons of the arts) was considered rebellious during the Renaissance. Carvaggio, an Italian Renaissance painter, is well-known for his painting of the famous biblical scene,Death of a Virgin. Instead of modeling Mary as the virgin, he used a deceased gypsy found on the side of a road. This was severely looked down upon..many were disgusted, and patrons refused to support the artist.
