The violin is a fully transposable instrument so does not have a "key" per se, unlike certain instuments that can be said to have a natural "key" such as horns, trumpets, etc. However, the lowest open string, and lowest possible note that can be played on the violin with standard tuning is "G." The upper open strings occurring by 5ths are "D" "A" "E"

A very large one. ^_^ the lowest pitch is G3 (G below middle C), and the highest pitch that I can hit is E7. That makes about 3 2/3 octaves. However, I've heard of people playing G7, which makes an even 4 octave range. Either way, it's big.

The pitches of the strings from lowest to highest of a violin are G, D, A, E, similar to the bass which has the same string pitches, but backwards.

Violas and Cellos have the pitches of strings from lowest to highest: C, G, D, A
