One Direction is an English/Irish "boy band," and they began performing in 2010. Since the earliest days of Rock Music, record companies have been eager to sign and promote good-looking young male groups, who would especially appeal to teen female fans (in those early years, girls were the ones who bought most of the records and joined most of the fan clubs). But even in our digital world, One Direction definitely showed their great popularity among female fans, who have followed their career faithfully, bought/downloaded their songs, attended their concerts, etc. The music of One Direction was intentionally designed to be mass-appeal pop, and as a result, it has been played by top-40 and hit-music radio stations world-wide. (It would be rare for country or hard rock stations to play any of their songs, since their music doesn't fit in with those formats.)
