Jessie J was born Jessica Ellen Cornish in Redbridge, London and was educated at Mayfield High School in the London Borough of Redbridge. She attended Colin's Performing Arts School and as an eleven year old was cast in Andrew Lloyd Webber's West End production of Whistle Down the Wind.[2][3][4] Cornish has two sisters, who are five and seven years older than her, who were both head girls at school.

She went to Mayfield High School in the London borough of Redbridge, also attending Colin's Performing Arts School as well. From the age of 16 she went to the London School for Performing Arts and Technology (known also as the BRIT school), graduating in 2006 alongside fellow pop singers Adele and Leona Lewis. During her time at the BRIT school, she was a member of a girl group called Soul Deep.

Soon after graduation, she suffered a stroke at the age of only 18, which has left her unable to consume alcohol and served to put her musical career on hold for a while.

Her real name is Jessica Cornish.
