Prior to the development of the major civilizations along the Nile, the locals lived in structures made of adobe-like mud brick and structures made of thatch over simple wood frames. Many of the stone columns in later monuments were carved to resemble bundles of papyrus bound together to form columns. There were probably a few caves along the banks of the Nile, as well.
