Bruce Dickinson was with another band called Samson before joining the Iron Maiden in 1981 after the band fired Paul Di'Anno. Other Iron Maiden band members, Thunderstick and Clive Burr were also part of Samson at some point of time.
In 1981 the band was formed by Lars Ulrich by placing an advertisement in the Los Angeles newspaper "The Recycler". The guitarist James Hetfield and Hugh Tanner answered the advertisement and joined.
Lars Ulrich (drummer of Metallica) put in an ad in the newspaper for auditions for a band (metallica) with people influenced by motorhead, iron maiden, deep purple etc. James Hetfield (singer and rhythm guitarist) saw the ad and joined the band. -1981
