Tony Thompson, during his most famous period (1985), used Yamaha Recording 9000 series drums and Zildjian cymbals. Cymbals included 14" quick beat hats and a 22" ping ride. drum sizes included a 24" bass drum, 10/12/13/15/16/18 toms (or combinations of). Often Remo Ambassadors top and bottom of toms and a Evans Hydraulic on the bass.
Prior to this , during Chic, I believe he used various more vintage kits - but Zildjians (New Beat Hats). After this period he used Tama drums for a while (a White Artstar kit. When Power Station returned in 1996/7, he was using Premier drums - Maple bass and floor tom, Birch rack toms. But always Zildjian cymbals.
His sound was the tuning, the studio rooms and the way he played (very powerful).
DW drums with zildjian cymbals
He played Premier drums and Paiste cymbals for most of the seventies tours, but used Zildjian cymbals in 1977 and 1978. He had eighteen drums in his kit on the 75-76 tours.
Daniel Adair uses DW drums, Remo heads and Sabian Cymbals
Well to be basic 2, acoustic kits and electronic kits, after which its how many drums/cymbals you want in your kit, what make, what col, which drum heads the list is extensive.
I can tell you that many different drums and cymbals were used. Some were old drums in the Hall of Justice in Seattle and I used my seventies Slingerland kit for the later sessions in San Francisco. Jason McGerr, the drummer in Death Cab For Cutie, lent me some snare drums for the Seattle sessions. As far as cymbals, I think I was still using Zildjians ( A Customs I think) at the time though I have happily switched to Paiste. Giant Beats and 2002s. That's all i can remember, sorry. Ira Elliot

The group Kirtan plays Hindu chants. This type of music is intended to be listened to by a very specific audience. The music is made with drums and cymbals as well as a harmonium.

An example is: Sounds on a snare drum can be described as a "crack" or a "snap" further defined by "quick" or "short". A piccolo snare tuned tight will give you a "short crack". Some cymbals are named after their sound like "crash" or "splash" cymbals. Cymbals can be further defined by "washy", "thrashy", "is cutting"....
The conga and the bongo drums, and occasionally the steel drums
A hi hat is a type of cymbal which has two parts (two cymbals) positioned on a stand with a foot pedal. The two cymbals can be pressed together with the foot pedal, which allows for a quick tapping sound, or tapped against each other rhythmically by pumping the foot pedal. This cymbal makes it possible to concentrate the hands on the drums, getting more complex patterns of cymbals and drums without having to use the hands as quickly.
