Before The Beatles were called The Beatles, they were known as The Quarrymen. It originally consisted of just John Lennon and several friends, but George Harrison and Paul McCartney joined later. They played skiffle music, which is a type of folk music with blues, jazz, and country influences. Skiffle is often considered a precursor to rock and roll. You can hear a few of these skiffle songs on the Beatles Anthology, and on a bootleg recording called The Decca Records Audition Tapes.

Tenor, I believe, or low tenor in some moments.
George played all kinds over the years. Early Beatles would be mostly Gretsch types such as the Duo-jet, the Country Gent and Tennessean. Later, and perhaps most famously, the Rickenbacker 360/12 (Hard Day's Night, Help). He also played a Strat, Les Paul, Epiphone Casino, and is playing a Gibson SG on the rooftop in Let it Be. I guess the Sitar doesn't count.
People that like the beatles.
We will ignore the orchestral pieces from "Yellow Submarine" because they were essentially written and orchestrated by George Martin. Not including "Best of" type albums, the last album they released that had non-Beatles penned songs on it was "Help!" The non-Beatles songs on it were, Act Naturally and Dizzy Miss Lizzy
The Beatles aren't a type of bag...
