Commercially licensed radio stations use one of two types of waves: Amplitude modulation, (AM) which have relatively low fidelity, but can travel great distances, and Frequency modulation (FM) which have a very limited range - usually no more than 100 miles maximum in stereo, but which have true "high fidelity" capabilities. There is also shortwave broadcasting, which uses waves of widely varying power and clarity, but capable of easily traversing the world. Their low fidelity limits their usefulness for music.
