The Ondes Martenot, an electronic instrument played on a keyboard, which produces a wavering sound similar to the theremin.
Beethoven's ninth symphony is unusual in that it is scored for a vocal quartet and orchestra.
The unusual characteristic of Mozart's 36th symphony is that the slow movement had a siciliano character which he only used one other time, in the Paris symphony. However, he continued to use this in his later works, such as symphony No. 40

Beethoven's last symphony marked the first time that voices had been used in a symphony. This is now called a choral symphony. Symphony No. 9 is widely considered to be Beethoven's finest work and among the best pieces music ever written by anyone.
It was Beethoven's last symphony; his abilities as a composer were fully-developed. It was the first symphony by any composer to use voices. In spite of the fact that it is in a minor key, it builds to a joyful finale. It has quite a few memorable melodies--in modern terms, it's got some great hooks.

Do something in an original & unusual way, something unexpected - in a sonic or formal way. either: [1] making sounds on an instrument in an unusual way (bowing a cymbal while immersing it in water), or making sounds on an "unusual instrument" (an Ebow on a toaster or playing cutlery) or [2] constructing music in an unusual way (John Cage & the I-Ching) or writing something that will have to be interpreted in an unusual way (graphic notation or some extension, thereof).

About the only unusual instrument used on the song "A Hard Day's Night" by the Beatles would be the harmonica.
The flute (and piccolo, alto flue, bass flute, contra bass flute) is the only instrument held to the side when played.
