His real name is Reginald Dwight, so he was probably still known by this name, or else simply as 'Reg'. He only adopted the name Elton John in 1968, as a tribute to the saxophonist Elton Dean from his old band Bluesology and also to Long John Baldry, for whom Bluesology were backing group in the mid to late '60s.
