Before Hamburg they had something like a 20 minute set of songs. When they arrived in Hamburg they were expected to play for hours every night. They improved quickly under such circumstances, expanding their repertoire greatly.
They experienced their first experiments with drugs, taking amphetamines to keep going during the long sets.
They got a following from intellectual students such as Klaus Voorman (see the Revolver cover) and Astrid Kirchherr. Astrid hooked up with bassist Stu Sutcliffe and convinced him to change his hair to the 'Beatle-cut' (George, Paul and John followed suit, in that order).
When they came home after their first trip (George, Paul and drummer Pete Best being deported), Stu stayed behind, leaving Paul to take over the Bass Guitar in the band.
They came back a completely different band, and the fan response in Liverpool was overwhelming.
Eight hour gigs with plenty of beer and uppers caused them to "put on a show". They also honed their musicianship and grew tight as a band and as friends. They learned how to work an audience. By the time they got back to Liverpool, they were a stronger group. Having to compress all that energy into shorter gigs made them that much more powerful as performers. They also had developed extreme confidence in themselves. Without the Hamburg experience, they probably would not have become The Beatles we know today. IMHO.
Im not sure what its called, but I think they were doing backup vocals on an artist called Tony Sheridans album
