John was, for me, the lead figure. Paul has an angelic face, which cannot be said of Ringo. George was the quiet one, or so it appeared. In the early days, although their hair was, for the time, quite long, they were clean cut which contrasted with the wild, bad boys, The Rolling Stones. They were well turned out and pleasant, but soon John would cut through with acidic wit & humour.

The Beatles' originally would call themselves a rock and roll band; they essentially would only play rock and roll mixed with occasional ballads - their early LPs contained this kind of mix. However, as their success grew they started playing different types of music; country, folk, jazz, classical and it became very difficult to tie down the "style" of the Beatles.
