The following songs all spent 12 weeks at Number One (the longest time for any single throughout the decade) on the US Billboard charts in the years 1940-49:

"I'll Never Smile Again," Tommy Dorsey

"Frenesi," Artie Shaw

"I've Heard That Song Before," Harry James

"Paper Doll," The Mills Brothers

"Heartaches," Ted Weems

"Near You," Frances Craig

Bing Crosby just misses this list, however he was the most popular singer in the world throughout the 1940s, charting 9 No. 1s and dozens of Top 40 songs in the US. The first release of Crosby's "White Christmas" spent 11 weeks at No. 1 in 1942. It was re-released many times over the years, and went to No. 1 again in 1945 and 1947. Seventy-two years after its first release, "White Christmas" is still the best-selling single of all time.
