It was some kind of apparition or natural pheonomenon that was beautiful and peaceful- therefore it could not have been anything violent like a Volcano, but might have been a sunset, unusual cloud formation, rainbow (probably not as enough rainbow-themed songs are around) the Line (The cream of earth shall reach, and bring good news of Peace) suggests something exalted or Up High in both senses of the word and perhaps a mirage of a distant city might qualify. apart from a reference to mountains in the opening line, there is no hint of locale. When I was a kid I heard it sung mainy by Black singers, so thought it was a spiritual or gospel song, it is not a Black spiritual song, it was written by Charles Gounod of (Ave maria) and (Faust!) fame how"s that for an odd couple. While not normally occurring in mountainous areas, the so-called Water sky or upwards reflection of surface objects might be factored in, this is common inthe arctic and can be photographed. The sog has a positive haunting quality of something mysteriously beautiful that is not quite defined.
