Mozart's mother had numerous children but only a daughter (his sister Anna, known to family and friends as Nannerl) and Wolfgang actually survived. Mozart's father, Leopold, was a driven man. As Vice-Kappellmeister (leading composer) for the court at Salzburg, he aspired to more. He trained his children to perform together, which they did, enjoying the attention they received as "Wunderkind" or wonder-children. Once Nannerl became too old to be considered a prodigy, Leopold took his young son and continued to tour, performing for officials and important people, seeking a position of higher importance for himself. Wolfgang, having been a sickly child, was small in stature and Leopold was able to pass him off as a child prodigy long after he had stopped being a "child". Mozart dabbled with composing from an early age, and he was brilliant on the clavier and the violin. he was pushed to compose his first symphony at age 8, and his father continued to push his composing. Mozart continued performing through his teenage years as his father, deeply in debt and passed over numerous times for the position of Kapellmeister, sought to secure a better paid position for himself and his son. During these times, the young Mozart thrived on the adulation and adoration of others, but he was irresponsible and quite happy to let others manage his affairs for him.
