Military commanders would command the Sumerian army only when their was war; however, when war became more and more frequent, the commanders were kep in control of the army, and in time, military leaders became full time leaders, and would hand their power on from father to son and to their heirs. A single strand of a ruling family is called a dynasty. Throughout time, dynasties can still be observed.
