He had a dog called Sally when he lived at his aunt Mimi's house in Woolton. After he got his relationship back on track with his mother Julia, his aunt Mimi (Julia's sister) became jealous and had the dog destroyed at the veterinary clinic.

John loved cats. He grew up with them at his Aunt Mimi's house and when he was married to Cynthia, they had as many as 10 cats at one time. While living with May Pang he had two, named Major and Minor and he had a few when he lived with Yoko and Sean in the Dakota as well. Tragically, John had some construction going in his apartment at the Dakota one day and one of the men turned on an electric saw and it scared his Russian Blue cat named "Gertie" (short for Gertrude) so badly that it jumped out of the window to it's death. John didn't leave his room for 3 days he was so distraught. Poor guy and poor kitty. :(
