There were quite a few reasons for the wigs of the 1700's. One of the biggest was the fact that until running water was invented, people only bathed once a week, sometimes once every two weeks. The purpose of the wig was to cover up their greasy, dirty hair. The wig was often scented with perfume as well, to help mask offensive odors.
Out of the necessity of the wig came a status symbol. You could tell the aristocracy from the more common people by the style of wig they wore, which was one of the reasons for its enduring popularity. The elite love anything that lets people know they are separate from the rest of the people.
