In his later life he was isolated by his deafness and persistent ill health. His visitors found it hard to communicate with him, and he became brusque and offhand. He also became unfairly suspicious of people's motives, and gradually lost contact with the outside world. He was eventually entirely absorbed in his own interior world, and the music that he composed at this time reflects that.
