Best Answer

The Ramones and The MC5.

Answer

This is a tricky question. As different people have different definitions of what punk rock is and when/where it began, there's no answer that everyone, or even mostly everyone, can agree on.

But I would say that the first punk bands ever were The Stooges and The MC5 in Detroit. A few years later, the first New York City punk band was The New York Dolls. Some might say it was The Velvet Underground, but this is a difficult opinion to maintain when you consider that lead singer/songwriter Lou Reed has consistently denied that his band was a punk band.

Either way, the Ramones formed in 1974, and the New York Dolls formed in 1971 (and The Stooges and The MC5 formed like, 5 or 6 years before that), so I don't see how The Ramones can be called the first punk band, unless you don't consider the Dolls or the Stooges to be "true" punk bands, which is a conversation that belongs on the Discussion page, not in this Answer box.

Someone else's answer: ramones

Ok, here's my answer: Yes, you could say that I guess. They did start the movement, but no, they are not the first punk band. They were influenced by bands refered to today as protopunk. Some protopunk bands were: The New York Dolls, The Stooges, and the Motor City 5.

this is a hotly contested question and the general consensus are the ramones. Yes they did invent the style the mood and tone of punk rock witch we have all come to know and love but a music historian would tell you differently, some of the earliest punk bar non is velvet under ground white light white heat and hey joe / piss factory by patti smith comes in close secont by the way this was happening before the ramones even had there first album deal. Other groops to note and fall under the umbrella of punk would be suicide the first electronic group but there sound was so primitive there is no other way to enplane them other than punk. Hope my answer elaborated on the previous answer above and answerd your overall question.

i would say that it was The Kingsmen. They were around in the 60s and they were a garage band. They are stated as defining punk rock
This is kinda of a hard question i suppose, mostly because it can go many different ways.It is said that the movement originally exploded in 1977 with The Ramones in NYC.

The Sex Pistols, and The Clash in Europe, and then bands like bad brains, black flag in the Los Angeles HardCore Scene(no not the Emo hardcore).Theres many groups that started out at the same time in the late 70's,but the groups that let to "punk" would be like The new York Dolls, the velvet underground, and of Course the Godfather of it all,Iggy Pop and the Stooges...As you listen to actual punk you get to notice the many different Sub-Genres of it,and bands that form before "punk" and you can come to your own better judgment of the sound and Label it as punk or not...

There is no objective answer to this question, but, in my opinion, the first punk rock albums were The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967) by the Velvet Underground, Kick Out the Jams (1969) by the MC5, and the Stooges' first, eponymous album (1969).

There is no one answer to this, as artists such as The Stooges, Patti Smith, MC5, and The New York Dolls incorporated elements of punk into their music, but are generally regarded as "proto punk," meaning that they influenced the punk genre, but came before it and are not a part of it.The Ramones, formed in 1974, are widely regarded as the first American punk band. The Sex Pistols, formed in 1975, are considered the first British punk band.
