As an Elizabethan seaman he followed the coasting trade for many years, but by 1565 he was voyaging to New Guinea and the Spanish Main. In 1567 he commanded theJudith and in 1570 and 1571 sailed to the West Indies to make good the losses he got from the Spanish. In May 1572 he equipped two small ships the Pashaand the Swan with 73 men, and landed at Nombre de Dios. On July 29 he beat off the Spanish, but suffered a wound. He burned Porto Bello, destroyed many ships, and crossed the isthmus to the highest point of the dividing ridge. He climbed a tree and saw the South Sea. Drake arrived at Plymouth Aug. 9, 1573 and the news of his travels made him a "rock star". In 1577 he fitted the Pelican with 100 tons, the Elizabeth of 80 tons and 3 smaller ships. He sailed out of Plymouth December 13; on Aug. 20, 1578, the squadron, reduced to three ships by the burning of 2, entered the Strait of Magellan where Drake changed his ship name to the Golden Hind. On entering the Pacific he encountered violent storms and lost the Marigold with all hands, and the Elizabeth returned home. Failing to find a passage to the Atlantic he turned and touched near the Golden Gate. He didn't sight land for 64 days until he made for Pelew Islands. After refitting in Java he headed for the Cape of Good Hope and arrived in England Sept. 26, 1580.The queen wasn't too sure how to receive Drake, but she paid a visit to his ship and knighted him. In the fall of 1585 he sailed 25 ships against the Spanish Indies and brought home 190 Virginian colonists with tobacco and potatoes. Early in 1587 he went to Cadiz and destroyed 33 ships and to the Azores capturing a Portuguese carack worth 100,000 pounds. He fought the Spanish Armada as part of the Eng. fleet in 1588. The next Spring he and Sir John Norrey's sailed for Spain and Portugal. They didn't accomplish much beyond inflicting damage to Spanish shipping. He will die of dysentery in Porto Bella in 1596.
