If the musician knows the notes for a rock and roll song, he or she can play the trumpet to make that music. However, if a musician doesn't know the notes, he or she might just make rocks roll instead.
Unfortunately the musicians are not credited in the movie. The trumpet solo in Balu's song "bare necessities" as well as its reprise at the end of the movie is most likely played by Cappy Lewis, an excellent big band and session trumpet player at that time, working with Woody Herman, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Benny Goodman and others.Louis Prima, lending his voice to King Louie, is unlikely to play the trumpet solo. Although a fine trumpet player, the solos exceed his technical skills. He can be seen playing the trumpet in some improvisation scenes during the recording of the soundtrack however. These scenes were used by the animators as inspiration for King Louie's monkey band.
Rafael Mendez has: Played Himself - Trumpeter in "Texaco Star Theater" in 1948. Played himself in "Toast of the Town" in 1948. Played Himself - Guest trumpeter in "Four Star Revue" in 1950.
