It began as an Artie Kornfeld/Michael Lang proposal to build a recording studio in Woodstock NY. The two approached John Roberts and Joel Rosenman, New York City entrepreneurs, for funding. Rosenman suggested they scrap the studio idea and have a concert instead. They chose the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival as a model. They had no idea, until shortly before Woodstock took place, that millions would be drawn to the festival and that close to 500,000 would actually gain entry to the site. In August of 1969, the "counterculture" of the late 60's transformed a concert into a legendary event that named a generation.

Richie Havens The original Woodstock 1969 lineup had the band Sweetwater starting the festival off. Unfortunately, they had problems within the band and had to pass up this prestigious honor to Richie Havens.
