Franz Joseph I of Austria was born on 1830-08-18.
Several of his last 12 Symphonies (#'s 93-104) commissioned by Salomon. They were composed and performed first in England. Favourites are nos. 94, 95, 96, 101, 102 and 104. Also, one of his pieces was set to words and now is the national anthem of Austria.

He institutedthe Ausgleich (comprimise) that created a dual monarchy in Austria after the Habsburgs crushed a revolution. There were lots of minorities in Austria and the people were not getting what they wanted all the time. So Franz Joseph made the Ausgleich to try and give the people what they wanted. It let each part of the empire have its own constitution, legislature,capital (Vienna and Budapest), and government machinery.
